Someone Worth Remembering

In past years I have posted historical facts about Remembrance Day and the poem "In Flanders Fields".  This year, I have decided to post about my grandfather who spent the war aboard the HMCS Transcona escorting trade convoys from Halifax, Nova Scotia.  While I do not know much about my grandfather's military career, the story of how he ended up in the Royal Canadian Navy has become a sort of family legend.

James William Jones
1912 - 1978.

James William (Bill) originally enlisted in the Canadian Army.  However, when the navy recruiter heard that he was an electrician by trade, he told him he should join the navy instead.  That by enlisting in the army he was going to spend the war on the front line serving as a soldier, but in the navy he would continue to work as an electrician and be an officer.

Grandpa Bill told the navy recruiter that he had already filled out the paperwork and given his word to join the army.  The recruiter told him not to worry about it and to start his navy paperwork and that he would take care of the army recruiter.  Which is how my grandfather ended up in Halifax escorting trade convoys during World War II

Lest We Forget
