On Wednesday, I posted a recipe for Chicken & Cashews. One of the ingredients is fresh grated ginger. While I love the smell and taste of ginger, it is not a staple in my pantry. I do not use it enough to justify keeping it on hand. I buy it when I know I am going to use it.
When I do need ginger, the amount is usually very small (chicken & cashews needs a 1/2 teaspoon), so the piece I bring to the register is usually so small that the scale will not register it. The clerk gives me the look, and I say "I do not use it enough to keep on hand and that is more than enough. Just charge me the base price." Unless it is the cashier's first day on the job, she shakes her head, smiles, and just puts it in the bag.
