This morning I did something that I have never done in my entire adult life. I purchased and had snow tires installed on my vehicle. I never really felt the need.
My wife and I have talked about buying them in years past. Usually in the summer or early fall, my wife would say we need to put snow tires on the car this year and I would say okay. But we never did.
Instead, we just cut back on the amount of driving we do. No winter day trips and only going out when we had too. So why is this year different.
In years past, the majority of winter driving was my wife driving to and from work. Her office was less than a five minute drive. This year, her office got moved across town, so now her five minute drive is closer to a twenty or thirty minute drive depending on traffic.
Secondly, when we called our insurance company to get our new car insured this summer, one of the questions asked was "Will you be putting snow tires on it?" To which, I guessed the correct answer was yes. It was, our insurance dropped like thirty dollars.
So now we have a 4-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires. Does that mean it will be road trips all winter, just like in the summer. No, it does not...while we may be prepared for whatever winter has to throw at us, it is still too damn cold to be wandering around the countryside.
