Hoppy Easter

My wife is a Unitarian, so she does not necessarily believe in the religious aspects of this weekend.  I once asked her if Unitarians do not believe then why do we celebrate Christmas and Easter?  Her response was she believes in presents and chocolates.

So for today's post, let's talk bunnies.  The Easter Bunny is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs.  Originating among German Lutherans, the "Easter Hare" originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behaviour at the start of the season of Eastertide.

In legend, he carries colored eggs in his basket, candy, and sometimes also toys to the homes of children.  So, the Easter Bunny is the animal kingdom's Santa Claus. Another similarity to Santa Claus is that they both bring gifts to children on the night before their respective holidays.

Over the past week, my Facebook has been covered in, both, throwback photos and current photos of children having their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny. The common factor is that each child looks terrified.  I never had my photo taken with the Easter Bunny, not because I was afraid but because, when I was kid, there was no opportunity to do so.

Movies featuring the Easter Bunny are not as common as Santa Claus, but he has his share.  "Here Comes Peter Cottontail", "Hop", and "The Easter Bunny is Comin' to Town" (another similarity to Santa Claus) to name a few.  But my favourite has got to be Hugh Jackman as the Easter Bunny in "Rise of the Guardians".

However, today regardless of whether the gathering is religious or not it does not matter.  It is about the rebirth of spring and spending it with family, friends, and food. And if that isn't enough, well then I say Bah hum-bunny!
