Yesterday, I attempted my second cake from the list of "Soda Cakes", I tried to bake the Sinless Devil's Food Cake. While my Father has had much success with it a couple of times now, I did not. Although, I am not deterred, while the result was not perfect, it was tasty.
I like to consider myself organize so I made sure that I had everything I needed out and ready, including the Pam to spray the pan. Of course, I did not want to spray it until the batter was ready, so the pan did not dry out. It wasn't until I had the batter in the pan that I realized the Pam was sitting there unused.
I thought it was a non-stick pan, so I ventured forth. I followed the directions on the package, and baked the cake. As I was taking the pan out of the oven, I put a divot into the top of the cake with my thumb; oh well a little extra icing will take care of that.
Sadly, it turns out I didn't have any icing. The icing container got squashed and ended up with a titanic size crack in it. The icing was a solid, disgusting, gelatinous blob.
Once the cake was out of the oven, I let it cool in the pan as per the package directions. I then put out my baking rack and attempted to tip the cake out of the pan. Remember when I thought the pan was non-stick, well it wasn't. Only half of my cake ended up on the baking rack.
I tipped the top of of my cake back into the pan. While it did not turn out perfect, I think it will still be useable. Check back next Wednesday to see the recipe I have in mind of the remnants of my devil's food disaster.
