This past week while we were camping, we got up close and personal with nature. One of nature's ambassadors that frequented our campsite was a cheeky chipmunk. Actually it was a ground squirrel, but that spoils the alliteration.
Our little host made it quite clear that we were guests in his world. He would roam around our campsite, coming within feet of us, exploring all the new things we had brought to share with him. He especially enjoyed taunting and tempting the dog.
The dog left one of his "cookies" outside when we went into the dining shelter to escape the bugs. The cheeky chipmunk wandered into the campsite and scooped it up. He did not disappear back into the bush with it, but sat just outside the dining shelter eating it in plain view of the dog.
If the dog thought that he was safe from this interloper inside the dining shelter...he was wrong. The cheeky chipmunk would come inside and help himself to a drink from the dog's water dish. He was not shy about giving himself a tour after drinking his fill either.
I will say this for our little host, he certainly made our camping trip entertaining.
