For ten years, on and off, I have had a Safeway Club Card in my wallet. It was almost like a ritual every time I moved west of Thunder Bay. Change my address, get my new driver's license, and pick up my club card.
As I read comments and other articles about the end of the membership program, I came across the phrase "evens the playing field" several times. Yes, that two minutes it took to fill out the club card application was so grueling, but it made the prize so much sweeter. I doubt anyone living in Western Canada, reading this, that has access to Safeway, doesn't have a club card in their wallet.
The funny thing about the demise of this membership program, is that neither my or my wife's response had to do with the store specials. My wife's response when I told her the program was over was "What about our gas discount?" While my chief concern is what will the CFL do to replace the Safeway Touchdown To Win promotion.
